Lituanie. 1941. L’opération Barbarossa . Toi et moi, lecteur, savons ce qui arrive. Les protagonistes du roman, assurément pas. Ces protagonistes dont je parle sont quatre jeunes personnes, entre l’enfance et l’adolescence, que le vent de la guerre emportera, transformera, cassera jusqu’à ce que ne restent que les vestiges de ce qu’ils furent ou auraient pu être. Qui sont-ils quand le roman commence ? D’abord (pas d’inquiétude, je ne spoile rien qui ne soit lisible dès l’abord du roman) Neriya, une brillante jeune fille juive de quatorze ans, qui perd sa famille quand le shtetl dans lequel ils passaient l’été est attaqué. Seule, elle fuit. Czeslaw, un très jeune soldat de l’Armée Rouge, d’origine polonaise (il a menti sur son âge pour pouvoir s’engager et soulager ainsi sa mère seule) . Czeslaw a perdu son unité et ses camarades. Déserteur, seul, il fuit. Kezia, une jeune Rom dont la famille est tuée sans motif aucun. Seule, elle fuit. Et Le Garçon, qui ne parle pas ou plus, que Kezia...
